The Market – Berlin Market Hall & Food Exchange
Univ.-Prof. BArch. MArch. Hani Rashid
The unstable complex identity of Berlin with its fragmented urban fabric asks for concepts to reuse the spatial reserves of the city. Raw, rough, and unprogrammed urban voids – Raumrohlinge – allow appropriation, occupation, improvisation and a hybrid programming of space.
The project propose a mechanistic landscape within the city. The programmatic idea is a market hall and food exchange. As an overlay of production, consumption and interaction in space superimposed by continuous public spaces, the Market becomes an urban catalyst for culture and delight. It provides a dense hedonistic and communicative space for excess, pleasure, madness, and individuality in the city.
The architectural setup generates various stories and scenarios, visually expressed as notational rhythmic space sequences. Transparency and translucency create layers of perception, density, simultaneity and distortion of space and atmosphere – a communicative infrastructure, an architecture of stories and events.
